Warhammer Tau Begins

Hello and welcome to Warhammer Tau, my regularly updated blog all about my Warhammer Tau army. I've been playing Warhammer 40K for longer than I can remember, although this is only my second year of playing the Tau army.  So they're by no means complete, which means my Warhammer Tau blog will combine all aspects of the Warhammer hobby with regards to playing, painting and winning with a Tau army in Warhammer 40K.

Last March I took the Tau for their first tournament at Carnage 2008, which took place at Warhammer World in Nottingham. Having spent most of my time painting the army, my Tau took a bit of a thrashing. Well, up until game 5 when a very savvy player trashed my Tau army with his army, then with an hour and a half to spare (yes, he murdered me in half an hour!) we swapped armies, so I had his army and he had my Tau army and we played again. He killed me again in half an hour using my Tau army, but quickly showed me how each unit was meant to perform and the rather hollistic philosophy of play that benefits a Tau army in a game of Warhammer 40K.

Armed with this new information about the Tau, I took my Tau army to the final game of the tournament, where I encountered another Tau army and used the tactics and philosophy I'd learned to out play my opponent at every turn, oddly winning the game in around half an hour.

Although my Tau army took a thrashing at their first tournament, I returned home with a strong passion for the army and a far less gung-ho approach to playing Tau. Havig refined my tactics, I began to slaughter my mates once more...until Warhammer 40K 5th edition.

Tau in Warhammer 40K 5th Edition
Now that Warhammer 40K 5th edition is here, bringing with it new rules, literal line of sight and a new style of play, plus the need for more troops than ever before, my Tau army is changing.

First of all is my Tau army list. As you can see from my army above, a single squad of Firewarriors cruising around in a Devilfish and a small group of Kroot isn't going to claim many objectives. So I definitely need more troops in transports.

In fact, having seen many player's armies, I'm convinced that I need to just buy EVERYTHING for the Tau and keep on building and building until I can field every single unit and weapon combination in the Warhammer Tau army. So this means all the tank variants, countless Tau battle suit types, a horde of Tau stealth suits, piranhas and even Forgeworld Tau extras for when playing Apocalypse games of Warhammer 40K. One day I'll have a couple of Tau barracudas and a tigershark as well as some Tau air caste. But I shan't get ahead of myself. I'm not the world's fastest painter, so I'll stick with producing a single unit at a time.

Then once that's done, I'll go buy another unit and paint that up. One of my friends takes this approach to building his armies and he's one of the fastest army builders I've ever known. I think, because he doesn't have a horde of little plastic men and tank kits staring at him whenever he comes home, he's more content with what he's doing and less stressed about getting it all done in a hurry.

Speaking of painting, I took the colourscheme for my Warhammer Tau army from the Dawn of War army painter. I sat there for an evening playing around with various colours until I came up with something I liked the look of. So I settled for a drab Russin military green with hints of brown, also inspired by Russian uniform and complimented by some vibrant orange stripes to bring these colours together and add something eye catching to the Tau army.

So, having read through my rant about my Tau army, I welcome you to Warhammer Tau, which I hope will be your one stop for all Tau tactics, Tau battle reports, Tau painting guides and all things Tau in Warhammer 40K.
