New Tau's First Tournament

May 31, 2013 ·

Little Geek and I are off to the Games of War summer tournament this weekend.

Games of War is a gaming store in Seaham in the North of England. They run 40k tournaments roughly every quarter and get around 20 or so people coming along. I’ve been going semi regularly for a couple of years now. It’s a bit of a drive (2 hours away) but it’s a great opportunity for Little Geek and I to get away from Mrs Geek and the Geeklets and have a “boys weekend”. So, we’re loading up the Geek Mobile tonight and heading off after work/school.

But enough rambling – what am I taking?

Well the GofW tournaments are not cut throat competitive, but then again, they’re not Throne of Skulls either, so you need to take something competent. There is usually a mix of armies, couple of guard, usually a Tyranid army, some grey knights, Blood Angles, a bunch of marines and Little Geek’s Demons, but I’ve seen Eldar, Dark Eldar and Tau mixed in as well. In the past I’ve taken Tau, BA, Podding Marines and Biker Marines. This time of course I’m taking Tau.

One slight twist – on day 1 it’s 1,750pts, on day 2 it’s 2,000pts. So my day one list is

Ethereal

Nothing terribly “experimental” really. The only real differences in the lists is the way they field Marker Lights.

I’ve gone for a mechanised Cadre, largely because I think it will be the most fun to play. I’ve played the list a couple of times, but it needs more games to really get the hang of it, which is what I’m hoping to do this weekend. So far my thoughts on it are

·         The Riptides have been a little disappointing. They are big, scary and extraordinarily durable, but XV8s put out way more fire power. The Riptides really need marker light support to shine.

·         Fire warriors in ‘Fish are fantastic. Zoom up, jump out and unleash 69 S5 shots at the target. Not much comes through that. Last Wednesday at the non-club 2 squads with 3 Marker Light hits between them, killed a 10 man pack of grey hunters that had gone to ground for a 2+ cover save.

·         Longstrike’s Hammer Head is also pretty good. In one test game he picked up 3 Marker Lights fired at a Helldrake by the Skyrays and swatted it out of the sky.

·         Jury is still out on the Skyrays TBH. Great against flyers, but otherwise…..!

·         The XV8 unit with the Marker Droens is good, but it’s footprint is quite big which makes it a little unwieldy. Also it gives my opponents a very obvious target to shoot at.

So, this weekend the spot light is on the Riptides, the Marker Drones and the Skyrays. The alternative is swapping out Riptides for XV8s, Marker Drones for Pathfinders, and Skyrays for Broadsides.  But that would give me a far less mobile Cadre.

Battle Reports to follow.

Gotta embrace it!

Have gone 3 - 0 day one. Game one versus death wing ( at one point he made 50 2+ saves !). Game 2 versus ultra marines. Game 3 versus a horrible horrible demons army with 5 FMC - fate weaver, keeper of secrets, and 3 DPs of slanesh!. Epic game

Probably up against chaos marines tomorrow game 4. Two hell drakes, 2 forge fiends, typhus and loads of zombies!
