A Drone for Every Occasion (part 6)

December 13, 2015 · 0 comments

Parting Shots: Dronefail 1.0

Well, folks, this is the last of my drone articles for a while. Highlights of this segment include me reading the rules for shield drones completely wrong and setting the Internet on fire (and it still burns with nasty comments which I delete), my invention of a new nick-name for a model, the "gargantuan drone" for the drone port (even though it doesn't have the drone rule) and a new controversy.

The new controversy is about whether or not Remora drone fighters benefit from the drone net formation bump to ballistic skill for all drones. I think it does, others think it does not because the Remora doesn't have the "drone" unit type.

The formation specifically grants +1 BS to all drones in your army. Pretty much all of our drones have the "drone" unit type listed in their descriptions, Remoras do not. Sentry Towers do, sort of, but Defensive Turrets don't.

I think the Remora not having this unit type is a simple oversight by Forgeworld in the Imperial Armour III book because the word "drone" is in the name of the unit. Therefore, I think it is a drone, and that they are intended to benefit from the formation buff.  So it comes down to another "Rule-as-intended" or "Rule-as-written" debate.

Book Review: Damocles Warzone - Mont'ka

December 10, 2015 · 3 comments

{SPOILERS: this entire article contains spoilers.}

Synopsis & Analysis
(because they are inseparable in this case)

Mont'ka is the second release in the Warzone Damocles Campaign.  This review concerns the storyline, and not the campaign maps or missions associated with it.

A note about the titles of these books:  In Codex Supplement: Farsight Enclaves, Farsight and Shadowsun study together under General Puretide.  Shadowsun follows the war doctrine of "patient hunter" or Kauyon. She relies heavily on deception, stealth, and misdirection to lure her opponents into over-extending their lines and falling into her carefully laid traps. Farsight prefers the "killing blow" or Mont'ka doctrine where victory comes from hitting the enemy hard in one decisive and definitive battle thereby destroying his ability and will to fight.

Book Review: Damocles Warzone - Kauyon

December 3, 2015 · 0 comments

Got my hands on the Damocles Warzone Campaign Supplement for Kauyon and Mont'ka.  I will review them separately (partly because I haven't yet had time to read Mont'ka).

The Set

This is more than a novel, Kauyon includes two books. The first book, entitled "Kauyon" details the narrative of the first part of the Warzone Damocles Campaign Series.  The other two parts are the Burning Dawn Miniatures set (the Infiltration Cadre for Tau), and "Mont'ka," the story of Farsight's role in the campaign.  Kauyon contains uniform illustrations, maps, artwork, and a functional story line for the progression of the opening engagements of the war.

A Drone for Every Occasion (part 5)

November 30, 2015 · 4 comments

Ever want to take a squad of drones in your army, but just couldn't bring yourself to field a bunch of BS2 targets that your opponent will work really hard to ignore?  Yeah, me too.

I mean there are times when I want to put out a pack of marker drones to reduce my need for pathfinders --who my opponent WILL destroy. After all, pathfinders are kinda stationary (at least if you want them to be useful with their BS3 makerlights you had better leave them stationary or put them on a tidewall).

Drones are jetpack infantry which makes them relentless which means they can move and then fire heavy weapons at their full BS. And they can move a some more in the assault phase.  What's not to love?

This installment:  Gargantuan Drone.

OR Say "Hello" to Gargantuan Drone...

I say "Gargantuan Drone" because the thing kinda looks like a big-ass drone.  It's got all the little anti-grav doo-hickies on the bottom, the thruster vent in the back... it's round, you know, like a drone. It really looks like a giant burgerbot... oh, never mind. The moment has passed.

One segment of the Tidewall Rampart is the Droneport, and some have called it stupid, and useless, but I'm tired of listening to teh Internet Trolls complain.  Let's see what this thing is really all about...

Eastern Empire Down

November 27, 2015 · 1 comments

Just letting you all know that a good guy got screwed over a few days ago.  Sebastian, who runs Eastern-Empire.com (another Tau Blog site) was the victim of a massive hacking attack.  His data is jacked and it's going to take him a while to restore his back-up.

Some people are just assholes.

I'm telling you this because it was Sebastian's creativity and awesome modeling skills that encouraged me to invest so much of my time and energy and emotion into my little blue plastic soldiers (as well as my Kroot, and my Naga, and my other little aliens).

Here's hoping you get things back up and running soon Seb!  I already miss your site.

Angry Tau Collectors

Seems like a lot of Tau wargamers and collectors are upset with GW at the moment.

The Kauyon and Mont'Ka campaign books are currently sold separately for about $74 US each. Many gamers bought the Kauyon book when it was released a few weeks ago, and now see that the Limited Edition Warzone Damocles Set includes both books for $205.

Of course GW did not mention the contents or even the existence of the Limited Edition when it released the Kauyon book... The metal coins and other bits in the LE are quite worth the $50 this time, really. Did anyone else notice that the slipcase in the second photo on GW's website is upside down?  One would think they could read Tau writing... after all, they created it, didn't they?

Anyway, folks are upset because had they waited they could have bought the limited edition for only $50 more than each of the two books separately -which is a great deal considering the how many collectors were fairly screwed over with the $180 limited edition codex.  That one was definitely not worth the bloated price tag.

The LE Codex was $131 more than the standard codex, and besides the nice box, gave you a rather nice map, some cards, and the coins. Definitely a bloated price.

My friend Salvetti bought the Kauyon book and is now pissed (American version of this word = angry, not intoxicated). I would be angry, too. I normally buy the campaign books right away, but this time I didn't have the cash so put it off till today, actually, payday.  Glad I did.

I also normally defend GW even though some of the things they do are a bit shady.  This one I cannot defend. They had to know this would happen and that they would irritate their customers.  If they didn't, then their marketing analysts should be sent home.

I feel for you guys....  Good luck selling them on eBay.

A Drone for Every Occasion (part 3)

November 25, 2015 · 1 comments

And here's our third installment of our 22-drone coverage. I've decided to add a couple more posts after this one to address the Gargantuan Drone (a.k.a. Tidewall Droneport), drone net, and other fun. Full disclosure, I do own all these drones, but those I do own are unassembled and unpainted, so I will rely on Internet pictures until mine are up to snuff.

The drone to the right is our Drone Sentry Turret, which is not a drone by the standard definition, but uses drone technology -as do a couple of the drones on this list. We will get to that later.

Let's get down to the brass tacks.

These are all the drones in the Tau inventory (that I know of), and that's too many for one post. So, I'm going to break them up as follows.

Farsight's All-Battlesuit Army is Back

November 24, 2015 · 1 comments

There was a bit of moaning when Farsight's ability to take crisis suits as troops was "lost" in the Codex update and Kauyon books.  But with Mont'ka, it's back.

Farsight's Dawn Blade Contingent is able to take a Retaliation Cadre as his core formation.

That Cadre consists of:

1 Commander
3 units of Crisis Battlesuits
1 unit of Broadsides
1 unit of Riptides

Tack that onto the "Eight" as your Command Choice, and maybe a Rapid Insertion Force or a Drone-Net full of BS-3 Marker Drones for your Auxillary, and Boom....  Jetpack JSJ goodness all over the place without the need for pathfinders.

Broadsides excepted, of course.  :0

You could always take a Firebase Support Cadre (or two) to beef up your all-battlesuit army swag...

Yeah, that's right.  The Big Red Battlesuit Boys are back.

Talisman of Arthas Moloch Conversion

Googled 'Talisman'. There you go
Like the Fusion Blades, this is a Farsight Enclaves signature system. However, unlike the Fusion Blades, this one is very popular for its in-game uses instead of its modelling potential or awesome factor. It is also a great opportunity for modeling creativity, so check out how I modeled mine!

The Farsight Enclaves signature systems are very expensive and often have very limited scope. Some are just downright unreliable. But to a conversion addict, they are one of the best parts of the supplement! Here is my finished representation of the Fusion Blades:

A Drone for Every Occasion (part 2)

November 9, 2015 · 6 comments

Have you noticed how many drones we have now? From the humble gun drone to the Ethereals new Hoverboard, there are now 22.

The drone to the right is our ever-reliable Gun Drone, perhaps the most useful drone in our inventory.  This second installment covers the rest of the drones available from GW.  Unfortunately, for these next two posts I will be unable to feature my own drones because I have not had time to put some of them together or paint those I have to a decent standard...

Seems to be my life, lots of new toys for Tau, but either papers are due or we have to cook a turkey, or some such...  I still need to build my stealth, guardian, and hover drones.

A Drone for Every Occasion (part 1)

November 2, 2015 · 0 comments

I was just looking through the new codex and it struck me how many drones we now have. In total, counting the Ethereals new Hoverboard, there are about 22.

The drone to the right is Commander R'Alai's Marker Drone, and yes, it is an odd little duck. I like the look of the drone, but not as a Marker Drone.  More about that later.

So let's go over them.

Tau Codex Leaks: New Formations!

October 26, 2015 · 14 comments

They are all over the web now. You can check just about everything you would want to know about the new codex HERE.

For now, I want to do a quick overview of each detachment/formation. These have only just hit, so I won't be able to comment on their actual effectiveness on the tabletop, but I can theorize. Here we go.

What Should I Buy Now: Part VII

October 25, 2015 · 0 comments

We have a lot of new toys for Tau with the 7th edition Codex release. Those units include:
  • A New Codex
  • Stormsurge Battlesuit
  • Ghostkeel Battlesuit
  • Tidewall Rampart
  • Firewarrior Breachers
  • Updated Crisis Suits
  • Commander and Coldstar Battlesuit
  • Ethereal Aun'Do
  • Burning Dawn Campaign (Infiltration cadre)
  • Kauyon Campaign Supplement
  • New Drones kit
  • New Decal Sheets

With those new units come some new formations. These are powerful ways to customize your army and add interesting capabilities for any type of situation.

By now you have probably amassed quite a few models, so I will just discuss the formations that are available. I am not sure which I plan to use, and as the codex is so new we will have to wait to see how they play out.

Strength D for Tau, Finally!

October 24, 2015 · 0 comments

So I was perusing the Codex: Tau Empire "formations" leak on Natfka's site earlier, and I must say I was impressed at how powerful and true to the fluff they are.
I'm loving the Fire Team rule and concept because it is perfectly Tau, and there will be another post analyzing all the leaked formations as soon as I get more solid info. But then, buried down at the bottom, I found some real Tau luvin' with a strength D missile.

The leaked rule states that Destroyer Missiles (those carried on the Stormsurge) go from strength 8 to strength D if responding to a markerlight.

New Firewarrior Breacher Sprues

October 23, 2015 · 0 comments

So I just got my hands on the new Firewarrior sprue, and I must admit that even though there are only  bits to make 10 warriors, the sprues are nice. Reluctantly, I will admit that I think they are worth the $50.

Pictures of the sprues are at the bottom of the blog, but here is a list of what is on them.

New Tau Rules Roundup

October 20, 2015 · 6 comments

It has been quite an exciting last few weeks for us Tau players.

Lords of War

I've already checked out the rules for these two. There is the Forgeworld model: KX-139 Ta'unar and then there is a the KX-128 Stormsurge. The two are quite different, with the Ta'unar being almost half-again more expensive than the GW codex LoW. While the Ta'unar is an insanely tough nut to crack, the Stormsurge is probably the most fragile Gargantuan Creature in the game.
The Ta'unar also vastly outlclasses the Stormsurge in terms of firepower against most targets, especially if the Stormsurge is forced to move around.

However, the new Heavy Retribution Cadre
formation might give the Stormsurge the edge it needs. Check out those rules in the other posts:

Codex Predictions Update: 7th Edition Tau

October 19, 2015 · 0 comments

Our new Codex drops next week, and though we've seen some rules for the new stuff, we still don't know how our current units are going to fare in it.

Here is my last prediction, and I am not changing it much, just adding on.

Here are some more educated guesses.

Command:

Well, we get a new commander battlesuit, I believe to be roughly based on the Enforcer suit from last edition.  That, plus some bits to make an Irridium version.  He can also be the Coldstar, which I think will never see any action. I play tau, but the flying ColdStar will be a huge target, die easily, and make me cry in front of my enemies.

He only packs a six-shot burst cannon and a missile pod, and no signature systems. UGLY. He is not good for much and is bad at a whole bunch of things.

Book Review: Firewarrior

October 14, 2015 · 0 comments

Author: Simon Spurrier

Synopsis:

Ok, so basic story line, a Tau kid struggles with his father's disapproval and goes postal on first the Imperium and then a resurrected legion of Chaos Undivided. He literally raises hell, and performs in an utterly non-Tau fashion.

Longer Story?  Sure.  Kais does not do as well in the Battledome training cycle and embarrasses his well-decorated and high-ranking father.  He is shipped off to a conflict where he somehow manages to survive a botched fire warrior insertion.

New Terrain, and What it Means...

October 13, 2015 · 0 comments

As you all know, Tau are going to be the first faction outside the Imperium to get a terrain piece.  I am not sure how I feel about the piece in discussion, but it is something.

We did get rules for the Area Denial Node a while back, but no actual model.  Of course we did get the Sentry Turrets and the Sensor Towers from Forgeworld...  but these were considered troops, not really terrain.

There was an Ork fortress in the 5th edition rulebook... but no actual model for it either, if I recall.

Another small bit, the DS8 tactical support turret in the new breachers/firewarriors box...  Seems like an eldar-like support battery that disappears when you move.

More firepower for firewarriors I suppose, not bad, but still not quite terrain...

This new model is a fortification called "Tidewall Rampart" and retails for $160 US (which means it will be about $500 down under).  The Tidewall appears to have two or three circular bunkers (resembling a Nemoidian droid command ship) connected by linear segments with a translucent blue energy shield.  It also sports a large railgun mounted sideways on a pillar (I dislike the aesthetics of this and will probably remodel it).

New Battlesuit Sighted?

October 12, 2015 · 7 comments

I cannot be certain, but I think we have a new battlesuit sighting.

I followed one of the links on Faeit 212 and it led me to this image (Thanks Natfka!).

It is not a standard Crisis Suit (new or old), and if it is a customized one it is very good.  I believe it may be the new Coldstar battlesuit (though I am hoping for better).

Check it out, not counting the Ghostkeel suit, it is the second battlesuit from the left. The shoulder and sensory "head" are easily swapped in from another kit, but the torso/cockpit area is not. The viewport is distinctly different as are the vents on the breastplates. The rest of the model apprears to be the same as the new crisis suits.

(Click the article title to see more)

Here are the links, and I'm not trying to walk on Natfka, just spreading the word. I love his website!

Jim Worthington posted the following comment,

A few things to notice.
In the first picture the last suit between the stormsurge and ghost keel has a different torso. This is the only model like this in either shot. It appear that the suits have similar arm construction like the riptide.
By that two piece construction that meets at the elbow allowing greater poses. Weapon options seem to be the same but the flamer has been redone.
As mentioned larger bases but that helps the suits look more dramatic than gen 1 models.
Fingers crossed that the commander is not in a static pose as shown and can be altered.

New Ethereal - Aun Do

October 10, 2015 · 3 comments

So we have a new named character, an Ethereal named Aun'Do.  He comes in the new Burning Dawn campaign, and I think I like him, and he has a couple of features as yet unseen.

First, at least as far as I can tell, he's plastic.  That creates a lot of potential for kit-bashing and making other ethereals.

Secondly, he is not covered in all the crazy robes, just a kilt and some armour on his torso.  Again, lots of kit-bash potential.

Third, Aun'Do rides a hover disc (a new technology -erm at least a new model) and even though I hate it for Aun'Do, I can almost see a use for it elsewhere.  I plan to use it for my Water Caste Ambassador, who will be modeled after the 54mm version from the old Inquisitor game.

I will use my new water caste models as objective markers where their height is not too much of an issue. The last thing an ethereal needs is to be more exposed as he hovers above his minions.

Lastly, and for what it's worth, he is holding a chain with pendants, one for each of the five castes.  Not to mention a pair of really cool feet.

Book Review: The Kauyon

September 26, 2015 · 1 comments

"The Kauyon" was written by Andy Smillie and narrated by Toby Longworth.  This review is for the short audiobook, not the campaign book released in 2015.

Synopsis (SPOILERS)

Kauyon is the account of a single Tau pathfinder who is the survivor of a team assigned to assassinate the leader of an Human garrison.  The Imperials include countless guardsmen (Cadians) and a tactical squad of Imperial Fists space marines, all under the command of a techmarine.

Kal'va is currently alone, but was originally part of a sniper team of three assigned to kill the techmarine.  He has a couple of flashbacks to the deaths of his teammates  O'Shara and Sas'lah and to the taliserra ritual that bound them together.  Sas'lah died helplessly due to a foolish mistake, and Kal'vas died killing five space marines with rail guns and sniper drones before he came to his untimely demise.

New Fire Warrior Theory

September 16, 2015 · 2 comments

Ok, so I have another theory.

The new fire warriors just might be veterans.

In the previous codex, Ethereals were permitted to have an "honor guard."  This was squad of veteran fire warriors which cost two points more per warrior, but had a +1 to their ballistic skill.  What if the new warriors pictured are vets?

Hmmm... let me daydream a bit...

+1 ballistic skill
Pulse rifles with markerlights?  No, they would never do that, a little OP.
A squad weapon that doesn't require a fireblade?
Gravimetric weapon perhaps?
BS2 or full BS on Overwatch? (definitely OP)
RapidFire 2?
Unrestricted (multiple-unit) overwatch?

All good options.

Here's the pic.

What do you think?

I am going to take the post about cool tau models on ebay down for a day or two just to allow both of these to to remain on the home page.  I will re-post the other one in a few days. :)

Cool Tau Models on E-Bay

September 14, 2015 · 1 comments

So, like many of you, I am always on the prowl for Tau models on eBay, particularly the interesting ones.

Well, I found some.  Nine to be exact.

Eight of these are female Tau warriors, and they're pretty awesome (expensive, but awesome).  All the female figures are scantily clad but tasteful pin-up type girls (except the completely naked one).

They are all very fine sculpted resin, and I really like them.  (And I am VERY picky about my Tau)  Fair warning though, they are kind of "busty" so keep them away from folks who won't appreciate a nice chest on a 2-inch figure.
--nothing we haven't seen before in the Warhammer world (Dark Eldar prisoners).

I plan to paint the girls up like Chianna from Farscape -you know, still blue, but a little more silvery than the typical true-blue of my fire warriors.  I'll modify some their logos a bit to be Water caste. And since there is a lot of bare skin, I may even give one or two of them water caste tattoos...

I plan to use them as objective markers.  Maybe I'll use one of them as a Shadowsun replacement.

This should work, they are slightly taller than my fire warriors, so they are just about the right size.  Now all I need to do is model a Water Caste Diplomat...  I think I will just make one based on the old 54mm Inquisitor model.

They all have "titles" in their ebay descriptions, but I gave them more Water Caste appropriate monikers.

The 9th one is a Tau grunt.  This big guy is going to be the Fireblade for my 3rd Hunter Cadre.

Anyway, here they are!  The seller names vary but I found these under montastore, warex_store, and aldoj_natal and they all seem to come from Costa Rica.  Good luck finding them on eBay.

And Aldoj_natal, if you read this blog, I think there is a huge market out there for a number of units GW doesn't produce.  Earth caste engineers, water caste diplomats/assassins/courtesans/etc, and even some room for Air caste liasons (modeled with a Tau communication array).  Heck, Gue'vesa would be nice too, if you're in a sculpting mood.

Hey, you guys share too, if you find something really cool out there.

Codex Prediction

September 10, 2015 · 3 comments

I have a prediction for our upcoming codex.  Without as many troop choices as our pointy eared friends, we will most likely not get three core options –that is, unless they do something with our alien allies.  I am betting on two, and one will probably look like the Eldar core formations.

Kauyon Hunter Cadre (#1)

1 Ethereal or 1 Fireblade

3 squads of 6 Firewarriors
1 squad of 4 Pathfinders
1 Piranha
(maybe a devilfish)
